Help to translate a joke, please! Russian-English

There is a simple russian joke:

"Патологоанатом умер. Но всё равно поехал на работу."

How would you translate this joke to keep the original comic effect it has?

Specifically, how to translate the verb "поехал" and keep original idea?

Ex: After pathologist died, he still went to work.

or: After pathologist died, he still came to work.

We desided that best way to explain the joke is:
#1 Patologist been dead, but still showed up at work.
#2 Patologist been dead. Nevertheless, he showed up at work.

Thanks for good advices, guys!

I would suggest the translation which is far from the original one, but preserves the black humour of the source:

The pathologist died, but he appeared in his working place as always.
