Birthday Celebrant or Birthday Girl??

My friend invited me to his girlfriend's birthday party but I didn't know the BIRTHDAY CELEBRANT or THE BIRTHDAY GIRL???

Can anyone help me making the difference between the terms clear? Do they mean the same?

Thanks

@Phil - Hey Phil! Thank you so much for the explanation. In case I can be of any help concerning Brazilian culture I will be very glad to help.

In American English, we would say "birthday girl (or boy)." This is usually true even if the person in question is an adult. "Celebrant" exists, and would theoretically work, but sounds ridiculously formal in English, so I wouldn't use it except maybe in a business contract or legal document. The only other reason to use "celebrant" is that it is age- and gender-neutral.
