Skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus)!  It blooms before anything else, when there is still snow on the ground.  Its flowers actively generate heat, melting all the snow around them.  This heat allows dozens of species of insects to be active at a time when nothing else is moving.  It smells bad, but it's beautiful.

I love cherry blossoms too. In my country we have the Protea flower. It's a hard and rough flower that can survive anywhere. And yet, when it blooms, it's bright red and green really makes it blossom above most others. Hopefully I'll get to see the cherry blossoms in Japan soon as well.
