Past continuous VS Present perfect continuous

Hi guys!

What's the difference between the past continuous and the present perfect continuous?

For example, if I say "I was writing my essay" or "I've been writing my essay", is the meaning changed?

Thank you.

In- 'i was writing my essay' the action is over. In 'i have been writing my essay' you can add a time which brings it into the present. I have been writing my essay for 2 hours.

But on their own 'i have been writing my essay' sounds like you are still writing it now.

 "I was writing my essay"
You were writing in the past at a point of time.

 "I've been writing my essay",
You keep writing from the past to the present and you are still writing at the moment you are describing.
