I think my friend's dog must have learnt Swahili or Mongolian because he certainly does not respond to instructions in English!

When I was speding my vacation in Bulgaria last summer, I realised that cats didn't understand me at all. They are 100% bulgarians. I tried different words...but they looked at me really strange:)) They got used to sounds in Bulgarian language. Now I am in Poland and the same situation. ..instead of Russian kss ksss, I try to say something like ksh ksh...))))))

My cat recognized the word I used for cat treats. (snack)  Whenever I would say that word, my cat would meow and look excited.

@Mrs Tad

Thanks. I don't have a profound knowledge of these things though. There's an enormous volume of scientific literature about the principals of learning in animals (and when I say animals, I mean all members from the biological kingdom animalia, including humans). If you are interested, you should read the books that are about behaviorism. There are several types of learning. Depending on how much you want to get into details, there are several directions that are still active and fruitful areas of research in today's neuroscience, psychology and related fields.
