Can you please explain to me what does  "Harry watched her with his mind a long way away" mean and if it's really useful expression?

Harry was thinking of something else/daydreaming while he was watching her. If she was saying or doing something unusual, it's unlikely Harry noticed it at all.

Usually you use the expression "a million miles away" to emphasize the distance; either "his mind is a million miles away" or "he's a million miles away", I've heard both.
