"Thanking" or,"Thanking to" his ability... - Thanks!

"He started as a technical engineer and was promoted all the way to the Director position thanking his ability to communicate and solve problems. " does this sound correct? Should it be thanking to his ability, or thanking his ability?

For the whole sentence, how would native speaker say it?

Thanks!

I think "thanks to his abilities" is the common way of saying that, but I'm not a native speaker of English.
