In English, we have an expression "Fight fire with fire".
That means if you are disrespectful, then I should be even more disrespectful and in this situation, no one can win and everyone loses.
So, why not fight fire (disrespectful behaviour) with water (respectful behaviour).
There can be no argument if only one person argues.
Refusing to copy and mimic someone else's bad behaviour is what we call 'taking the high road*'.
* When you 'take the high road' - it means doing the right thing even if it's not popular or easy.
