How can we help dissatisfied students to achieve their goals?
Some comments on yesterday discussion 'Do you remember?' were really pessimistic. People wrote about 'the worst day on Italki' instead of 'the best'.
Many great Italki teachers and tutors, students and independent users can help you with some advice.
So, what is your advice? What is your 'recipe to be successful?
First of all I think it's fine to talk about negative experiences as well as positive. They are part of life and talking about them can be helpful to get a good advice or support as well as to let others learn from your experiences. Pretending everything is perfect will not necessarily fix anything.
To answer your question, I have two pieces of advice. First, adjust your expectations. A lot of help is being given here and that's awesome. But many people seem to expect too much from the website and in some cases are also not willing to offer much in return. This is definitely not a place to find free teachers. Still, many members seem to be disappointed that they can't do just that. And remember, people used to successfully learn languages much before the internet was invented, so you can definitely do it without some stranger who is going to teach you for free. Second, don't take everything too much to heart. Here it is very easy to get in contact with anyone and some people are going to abuse this. So you are bound to get random insults from someone at some point. You shouldn't let a stranger ruin your day. Well I guess I have to work on my second advice myself.
I show great respect for those retired experienced and professional school teachers who help the students. I do not judge them as they, like me, also work for their lives. However, this doesn't contradict the fact that italki teachers are products.
