Good alternatives to Skype... particularly for desktops (Windows and Mac)?

A language companion who wants to resume our conversations mentions that she can't get Skype to work. She says:

"I do not know what happened but my account has been blocked or some thing similar. I have tried to open one new but it has been impossible.  It is a problem..."

She uses Windows, I use Mac OS X, so it has to run on both of those platforms.

What would be good choices for video calls that a) don't require a smart phone or cellular data usage, and b) are reasonably easy to use?

Viber is far superior to Skype

I would offer WeChat, it's ID based (not telephone number based), has a Desktop app. Although, you still need the phone app to unlock it at every program start (sort of like the Whatsapp website).

There's a web version of Skype she can try too.

You can use one time video chats websites too:

You could also use discord, it offers video chat, screen share, etc.
