Are languages a blessing or a curse?
I live in Catalonia (Spain) and I speak both Catalan and Spanish. Also some French. Now I am learning English. Sometimes I feel languages as a curse, sometimes as a blessing. They say that each language gives us a vision of the world. Is this diversity so important? If you had a button able to make all languages disappear except one, if we could wake up tomorrow knowing all this language and forgetting about others, would you press the button?

Well General Franco pressed that button and imposed Spanish to Catalans.
I find your question weird! Would you abolish at the same time all the differences between people. No green eyed people. No blond, only black hair, no whites only blacks? How boring.

Is saving time the only reason you want to abolish different languages? Why are writing, painting and listening to music a better way of spending time than learning languages?

No, I'd never press the button. Which language should we choose then? English is quite established as a Lingua Franca, so you could learn just that one and get by in most places around the world. But I'd find it boring. So much great literature and culture lost forever just for the convenience. In many places, kids don't learn foreign languages at school but that doesn't necessarily lead to more painting. Writing and listening to music doesn't speak against learning foreign languages because you can write in a foreign language (like you are doing right now) and listen to music in foreign languages. I find this enriching.

If we are getting rid of languages Catalan will have to be among the first to go, spoken by so few people world wide!!!
