What do you do during your English lessons at school/university?
Do you have well-organized conversations?
In school's 80% of the teacher concentrate on simple structure and common words and almost none focus on pronunciation which led to a lot of mistakes in pronunciation, the most famous mistake is " clothes " which is mostly pronounced as " kloz +es " instead of " kloz "
I had a course at the american university and it was a mix of learning and group activity, it was such a great experience, it depends totally on the teacher, one teacher can be very boring and another maybe very very active, may oral exam was so strange in fact 3 were assigned to be investigators ( I was one of those ) and the rest were assigned as suspects everyone of the suspects was given a paper to memorize what he will say to the investigator and investigator joined the room later to investigate the killing of a belly dancer !. We were given songs to listen to during the class and to write down the lyrics as groups of 5, also we made an analysis for a football match as being part of tv show ( virtually ), it was such a great experience
In my school a teacher gives us a list of vocabulary that we have to learn within a week. During the lessons she does her make-up on and asks us to read different sentences in English. Once in a while she explains us how to form the Present Simple and the Future Simple tenses. It's okay. Yeah, she also loves to ask words pointing out on an object and asking what it is in her hands. We have conversations like: What day is it today? What is the weather like today? What we did during the weekends. She gets angry when I say love this way : [luv] and I love getting on her nerves this way. I love English lessons, but the real English I'm learning from my friend who's more advanced than me.;)
Thank you very much for such an interesting story! Certainly, your great experience at the american university is so important that might be used by many teachers and students from Italki community.
At the same time, It seems to me, that the success of 'Killing of a belly dancer' investigation is not only your teacher's achievement, but also your personal one.
Besides the poor education at Egyptian schools, many people from tourist industry speak good English. I was in Egypt many times. When I was the first time some 15 years ago, I was impressed very much about such a surprising fact:
a boy from hotel beach whose work was to give towels and took them away, spoke English much better than our English teacher at village school in Poland! Hm-hm... Now the situation in Poland seems to be improved...people say.
