This is the simplest and best explanation I've found. Before really studying Spanish I studied Italian and prepositions are a pain there as well. Reading a sentence as doing something "for the purpose of" helped a lot when figuring out if I should use "per." I try not to be too hard on myself if I'm wrong because I figure native Spanish speakers sometimes mess up on por vs para too. I know my English isn't perfect!
