Have you ever been blocked by someone for disagreeing with you in a discussion? This happened to me today,  and I was quite surprised who it was. I found out because when I tried to up-vote their post, it failed. Has this ever happened to you? Do you think it was the right thing to do?

Yes, Elizabeth (she's gone now) blocked me for something I wrote in one of her discussions and then proceeded to lambast me and twist my words when I was unable to defend myself. If she wasn't going to attack me publicly after blocking me, then fair do's. However, she did, so I think she could have at least waited until the thread had fizzled out before blocking me. Oh well.

I think the problem is not disagreement itself. Sometimes, it's about how one words disagreement. Plus, cultural and language barriers easily lead to misunderstandings, and consequently repulsion and exasperation.

Yes, I was blocked by someone on italki. :) But I haven't blocked anyone, since I don't like to deprive them from their prerogative of participating in the Discussions.

Ahhhhhhhh good old Elizabeth.  She did spend a lot of effort trying to keep us in line.  I do miss her :-)

I guess something that seems like just a difference of opinions to one person, someone else may feel very strongly about. Some opinions are considered harmful, dangerous or very insulting by some people and may cause strong negative emotions. After all, any form of discrimination, pro war, pro violence attitudes etc. are often considered just opinions by those who hold them while they are highly damaging to others.

And yes, I've been blocked by people I don't even remember ever having argued with. I assume I wrote something they didn't like at some point but they said nothing. I think it's right. Everyone who wishes to block me for whatever reason should feel free to do so. After all, I wouldn't want to communicate with someone who doesn't want to communicate with me, for whatever reason, and blocking me is a way of letting me know, so I respect it.

Aegis, consider yourself lucky. If someone doesn’t appreciate my contribution, I have no desire to waste my time commenting on their future posts. Sadly, if you block someone, you’re still able to accidentally comment on their posts and give them thumbs up, so it’s much better if they block you.
