The "medical leave" is a bit tricky, as it works a bit different in Germany. When you are sick, you can just stay at home for up to two days. In this case you can say: "Er ist krank und bleibt heute zu Hause", and a boss might say:  "Gehen Sie nach Hause und kurieren Sie sich aus!" or "Bleiben Sie zu Hause, bis Sie wieder gesund sind!". By the third day you have to see a doctor who will certify that you are sick and can't go to work for a certain number of days. In this case you say: "Er ist [bis Freitag] krank geschrieben".
