I tried to read this but the article page won't show the text. Only the picture of a girl by the river.

Interesting article! I just don't see foreigners learning Zhuyin though, it's far more complicated than Pinyin and probably slower, too.

Thanks Laurence, I think it's just totally different from English phonetics, not really so complicated LOL. There are some people learning it, but most of them live in Taiwan. I do have some students who are living in Taiwan and learning Zhuyin, their skills of Zhuyin are even better than mine, I guess it's not so complicated though. LOL :)

Thank for the article, Wesley. I see you've been featured on italki's own YouTube channel! 很棒啊!

When I was starting out with Mandarin phonology, I really hated pinyin because I found it confusing and inconsistent. I one point I even decided I should learn zhuyin instead. After all, learning hiragana and katakana had helped me a lot years ago while learning Japanese. But, the harsh reality is that it's waaay easier to find materials in simplified Chinese with pinyin than it is to find materials with zhuyin. Also, zhuyin keyboards are nowhere to be seen in my country. So I gave up and decided to befriend pinyin instead of seeing it as an obstacle. I watched Fluent Forever's videos on Mandarin pronunciation and used Fluent Forever's "pronunciation trainers". That helped a lot.
