Is it possible to make true friends without ever meeting in person?

When I was in 8th grade, I made a friend through a mutual friend but I had never met her in person.  At that time it was common to spend hours talking on the phone, and my friend and I would talk all the time.  After about a year and a half we were able to meet in person and we recognized each other immediately even though we had never seen each other's picture.  (These were the old days before Skype!)  We have remained friends, even though we never met in person again.  I consider her a true friend.

Have you ever had a friend that you have never met in person?  If you ever did meet that person, did the meeting seem natural or uncomfortable?
