hit so close to the mark

She waved a hand, but couldn’t hide the anger and disappointment. “Partners. Opinions.”
“Beckett only wants what’s best for you. It’s all any of us want.”
“Then, put me back to work.”
“Do you really think that’s the right thing for you?”

She looked away because his question hit so close to the mark “The job is what I do best.”

What does "hit so close to the mark

what does "The job is what I do best." mean?

"so close to the mark" means to say something that is correct about a person but that person may be denying it.

person A is always pretending to be brave but in reality, they are desperately trying to hide their cowardice

to hit so close to the mark; would be when someone points this out or suggests it to them

'you may act brave and constantly pretend to be a brave person, but you are really a coward" <-- whoever says this to the person has hit the mark or hit so close to the mark

"the job is what I do best" = my job /this job/that job is what i do best
