I think when your level is A1-A2 you should try to work with books first, preferably books that teach you step-by-step on how to form proper sentences (grammar&vocab). Like, books that start out with explaining to you genders, the most important tenses, direct and indirect objects, etc. I think it is best to learn the basic grammar on your own.

Then when you reach B1, you should start with a tutor or professional teacher because you can express yourself way better at that level. By that level you should be able to talk about things in the past, future and present. When you're at the A-levels you can't really have an actual conversation with someone because you can only talk about very limited topics and you will most likely end up relying on a dictionary or translator. You don't want to pay someone to just simply learn how to introduce yourself or talk about the weather or your family unless you're rich or something.

Edit: I think writing daily notebook entries is a great way to practice.

Garry,

I'd recommend you to start with your English first.

Good luck!
