Language is about the communication of meaning; Loneliness is about the lack of sustained language In thinking about how best to acquire a language based on the importance of comprehensible input, I began to think about the purpose of language. It seems to me that the purpose of language, particularly conversation, has to do with relationships. As I was thinking about the purpose of language, I happened to remember that loneliness is a huge problem in modern society. I thought it would be interesting to have a discussion about how language and loneliness are related. I intend for the first part of the title to have a double meaning as it relates to loneliness. Language is about the communication of meaningful information. In regard to loneliness, language is also the communication that the other, the relationship with the other, the time spent in conversation with the other, the ideas and thoughts of the other are meaningful/significant to me.

Stan, I don't really agree with the second part of your title.

For me, loneliness is more about the lack of bonds and connections with others. You can be a great speaker of several languages and still feel loneliness, because human communication goes far beyond words. Sometimes our body language says more than the sentences we pronounce.  For a couple in love, a long, tender gaze into the other person's eyes is worth a thousand words.

Connection to the outside world is not an easy task. It is about how you see the world and how the world is watching you.  Language of course is a useful tool to bridge you linking to the outside, however considering a language is none other than a tool to help you connect both sides, you still have to learn communicative skills to assure your concept is clearly conveyed and expressed to a proper person with no error. Of most importance is the intent of your wording. Think about if your intention conveyed is not kind at all, even though it is a perfect communication with no error, people would not like to talk (communicate) with you again next time then you will become more and more lonely day after day.

@Casey

That is very true, Extreme introverts are often unable to practice and interact with other speakers so that they have to find their ways to learn however they can do more in listening, reading and writing to amend their weak points in speaking.

Loneliness is a complex issue that can be attributes to a series of causes. Sometimes the lonely do not realize why they are so lonely. Even so, the most significant determinant of loneliness is one's state of mind rather than physical condition. When you are unable to open you mind to accommodate others' state of mind, you are very likely to feel you are lonely even if your family and friends are all around you 24-7-365.

@Casey

I believe that extroverts can do better in acquiring speaking skills, because they are less shy and more comfortable talking with people in their target language.

Introverts, on the contrary, can be strong in reading and writing, activities that they can do when they are by themselves.

 Do you feel like you are talking to somebody by reading and writing?  If it's so, Stan's comment makes sense. You are not alone as long as you can read.
