I would recommend Deutsch for Dummies if you dont know anything of any language, good books arent so expensive. ;)

You don't have to pay for Pimsleur if you have a decent public library. I check out the Pimsleur courses from my library and rip the files onto my iTunes. I have about 8-10 language courses from Pimsleur simply, because I have a library card.

I strongly recommend Deutsche Welle's site. There are lots of great resources, for free.

If you're a total beginner, I recommend Nicos Weg.

If you're willing to pay, Pimsleur is a way to get you speaking and Assimil is excellent to learn Grammar.

When you feel like chatting with other learners, you can try Deutsch für dich (by Goethe Institut).

Good luck!
