coals burned in the hollows of his bones.

Eli was nodding, and Adrian felt his throat close. Eli Lawrence was more father than friend, and as Adrian wrapped the man up, he found him so light and hot it was as if coals burned in the hollows of his bones.

What does "coals burned in the hollows of his bones." mean?

This phrase is very poetic. If you have played around with the coals (burnt wood) of a fire, then you know they can be both hot and very light weight. Even a slight wind can move them. So this phrase is indicating that Eli's body seemed to have very little weight and was hot (perhaps due to having a high temperature from a disease?).
