I am hugely motivated by thanks.  If someone says thank you -- I will do more in the future. If there is no thanks, I feel unappreciated and like I wasted my time, or was being foolishly useful / a keener.  I understand this is a pretty simplistic morality but there it is. I work for love as much as money, and an acknowledgement means a lot. Just my two cents.

Phil, I get your point of view. I wouldn’t encourage either sterile “thank you” with no real meaning, although like John says it is always good to know those words in any foreign language.

Actually, it is not only a matter of being rewarded in some ways but to know that the person who wrote the notebook entry also read the correction. Some people at least click on the thumbs up button, but one never knows if it is the original poster.

i agree with mondaytuesday that it is so nice to have the feeling of being appreciated. I truly admire those devoted people who corrected hundreds of notebook entries. Some are teachers who already developed the necessary skills but others are laymen. There is however a benefit in correcting the texts of others, one has to think about his own language.

just copy Phil's comment into my box, it doesn't bother me if they do not leave a thank you, but it does tend to show they are at least trying to be polite in their use of English.

I always say or try to say thank you in the language of any country I may visit, I noticed it gets readily appreciated whenever I do that.
