What is the difference between "specially" and "especially" ?

Especially is the proper word.  I am from the southern US and think "specially" sounds like lazy English.  I would not use it.

I just read the above referenced discussion.  His answer is better than mine, citing a proper use of specially.  Although, I have also have often heard it used improperly.

Specially is chiefly American, especially is chiefly British.

I would use them interchangeably... unless with someone more educated than I am. But I live in a very small town.
