Using video games to learn language So I'm thinking about setting up the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in French and using it to learn. Anyone ever tried this or know if it is effective in learning?

Jorry, where do you think, my English comes from?!:-)

When I was a kid (well before Morrowind:-E)), games ere not translated to Russian. Those that were, were translated by enthusiasts (pirates:)). And if you think that a kid won't play a videogame just because it is in English, Chinese, or whatever and say "it is too complex, I better read that appetizing algebra textbook with those sexuy manifolds on the cover" instead...
..you are mistaken.

I don't think it is 'efficient'. I know 'pottery' and 'bronze working' form Civilization, and also 'sorcerer', 'sorceress', 'warlock', 'magician' and a bunhc of synonyms from Heroes (of Might and Magic), but I didn't understand why "working" in Bronze working.
Reading dialogues was harder and more enlightening.
But point is just that it came for no cost and it was some English material. If you want to be efficient you need more, but this won't harm. ANY exposure to the langauge won't harm.

Fascinating. Good to know there's some people here who've tried it and had success with it. Thanks all for the replies :)

I did! I think I even wrote a Notebook entry about it here haha. Yes, I think it's a good idea, especially with Skyrim! If your level is good enough to turn the subtitles off - do it, it's almost like living in another country (I know what I'm talking about). Try not to pick up all the mediaeval slang you'll hear (or at least try to differentiate between dated expressions and something you can use in everyday life). I failed miserably in this regard, be smarter than I was. And, of course, don't take an arrow in your knee :)

Eh, I'm absolutely delighted I'm not the only one here who tried (or thought about trying) Skyrim for learning a language. Good luck to you!

I am a big fan of Assassins Creed. Game play, graphics and the language used in the cut scenes when Arno Dorian and Ezio Auditore kill a Templar.

I am interested in finding out more about this. Do many video games have Spanish language tracks? I am trying improve my Spanish to a conversational level, and would like to throw a video game or two in to spice things up from time to time. How would you go about incorporating them into your learning plan?
