Is this sentence grammatically wrong to have two verbs?

The sentence is fine.  It has two independent clauses joined by the conjunction "and."


"China’s economy is still second in size to America’s and its army, though rapidly gaining muscle, pales in comparison."

= China's economy is still second in size to America's [economy]

and

its army ... pales in comparison [to America's army].
