Il pleuvait, alors je ne suis pas sortie.     It was raining so I didn’t go out.

Il pleuvait, donc je ne suis pas sortie.     It was raining so I didn’t go out.

Attention @William, comme tu es un garçon, tu dois écrire "je ne suis pas sorti" (sans -e qui est utilisé quand le sujet est féminin). exemple : Marie est sortie / Michael est sorti. 

Bien vu Nitij ! 

Et pour moi, "donc" sonne plus naturel que "alors" dans ton exemple.

I know this might sound silly but why don't we have je ne suis pas sorti rather than je ne suis pas sortiE, isn't past participle of sortir just sorti ?

Tous les deux sont corrects. On utilise souvent alors en langage courant.

Both are correct, to be honest, there is nothing wrong with using either. Donc and alors are synonyms and can often be used interchangeably. Donc would sounds better and more natural though.
