Two things some italki members should know...

The following suggestions are made with the benefit of all italki members in mind.
Please do not take any of the comments below personally.

**************************************************************************************************************

1 italki has a link under the Community tab entitled "Find Language Partners".
This is what we should use when looking for a Language Exchange Partner.
I understand that using the Discussion section may be convenient, but the large number of requests have the
effect of pushing the discussions off the first page and discouraging members who wish to post their
discussions.

2 italki does not have a policy or guideline regarding the use of the Discussion section for the purpose of
advertising, marketing or posting teacher or tutor ads (invitations to students). The best way to attract new
students would be to answer questions posted in the Answers section, correcting Notebooks and/or
posting new discussions or even commenting in the posted discussions.
Imagine what would happen to the Discussion section if every teacher and tutor decided to market and
advertise their services in the Discussion section.

Sometimes I wonder if people actually pay attention to the requests.

You see things like "I want English for Spanish really bad."

Going down two posts, you see "I want Spanish for English real bad. Contact me ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And then the cycle repeats for countless posts.

If people paid attention to the posts, there would be far less posts.

I think we're all familiar with the typical pattern : "I'm new here and I'm looking for someone to help me learn English" ; + comments on others' similar posts : "I'm here, add me" ; next day - repeat ; no further activity except maybe further repeat postings of the same. After two weeks no further activity on the site.

I've never looked to see whether these people are still around after 3 or 6 months, and if they have done anything else by then, but I suspect that in most cases they just disappear. That's why the number of users on Italki is approaching 5 million ; most never bother to cancel their registration. The vast majority will never take paid lessons ; they have picked up the idea that this is a place where you can find someone to help you learn English, for free.

As long as Italki has the server capacity to host such vast numbers of unprofitable users they will continue to do so in the hope that a small proportion will convert to paying participants. It costs Italki nothing, and the irritation it causes to serious community users can be ignored. At the end of the day, this is a business, not a members' club.

Adrian...

Thank you for your support.
It may appear that I'm a tad naive (or even more than a tad:), but Hope Springs Eternal**.
So, here's hoping that it might do some good.

The other day, I posted a discussion which was bumped off the first page in minutes - replaced by 18, yes 18 Language Exchange Partner requests... gee!

** hope springs eternal
It is human nature to keep on hoping against all odds. This particular expression was coined by the poet Alexander Pope in An Essay on Man (1732), “Hope springs eternal in the human breast,” and very quickly became proverbial.
