How do you say a sentence like 'The child learned that dogs are able to swim'?
I've been looking in my textbook but I can't seem to find a solution. My closest guesses are:

ta3allama l-tifl yaqdirūn sabaha kulub
ta3allama l-tifl yaqdirūn kulub al-sabaha

I don't think either are right - what would the best way to translate the sentence? Thanks :)

Hi! Actually, neither guess is right! ;)

You can say:
تعلّم الطّفل أنّ الكلاب قادرة على السباحة.
ta3allama l-tifl anna l-kilab qadira 3ala l-sibaha

Its as Mr Mohammad said.
تعلم الطفل أن الكلاب قادرة على السباحة.

تعلم الطفل أن الكلاب تستطيع السباحة

I suggest you learn how to read and write Arabic in Arabic letters. It may seem hard to you but with practice you'll do it. Writing and reading Arabic using latin letters will not let you progress in your learning. You'll always find it hard to pronounce ( As Arabic and english pronunciations are different)
I can help you in your learning journey if you are motivated.
