Leopards never change their spots
Aka you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I don't know if I'm a dog or a leopard but it sure seems to apply to me.

I've always been averse to writing things down and even more averse to formal grammar lessons. I've always relied on my memory to absorb the patterns in a language (call it implicit grammar). This was so over four decades ago in high school and it hasn't changed a bit even now.

I use various apps for self practice and have noted that I love the speaking exercises, fill in the blanks and comprehension exercises as much as I hate writing (typing) and formal grammar reviews. What, I ask myself, will I do with uncountable quantifiers, prepositions and irregular verb stems? I should speak and write without error, that's all!

I'm not saying that my way is any better than anyone else's, or indeed, will even work at all for someone else. What I am saying is that we all have our preferred ways of learning and nothing (including the passage of time) normally changes that.

Do you also stick to your individual style or have you changed that over time?

I rarely speak in real life unless that's absolutely essential but it's my preferred activity while learning languages and cultures. That apart I also like to write short pieces such as these discussion posts. Funnily enough, I do not like written exercises as such in any language.

I like reading and my favorite jobs of all time included reading the whole day long. But I can not improve my language level without standard exercises. I do not like speaking so much with people unless the conversation is valuable. It excludes the classic chatting which I have done enough of. I like very much my new Russian book club because we speak about books and I can hear other opinions about some precious pieces of literature. Writing is difficult for me because I have to write on abstract subjects which I find sometimes challenging. But I feel satisfied when I have my essay done :)

I am certainly one of the lazier variety of creatures, so an arduous regimen never suits me. At school I disliked history and grammar. Since then I learned to like history but that never happened with formal grammar. Others have other styles and many actually do like grammar and are industrious. Maybe it works that way for them but not for me. Our ways differ even for the same destination

I guess my style has not changed. But it doesn't work in many situations... Sometimes I'm thinking of arranging things in a stricter way. But changing one's lifestyle isn't easy and, frankly speaking, I don't find it necessary. So I prefer to avoid the tasks that evidently require methods I don't like)) Laziness is the engine of progress they say...)
I'm not sure about progress but my approach certainly contributes to peace of mind)
