It's been said that one way to improve language skills is to form a connection with the culture. It's true! The more you get to know a culture, usually, the more motivation you'll have to learn how the people communicate.

There are a lot of things about American culture that are weird to people who live in other countries. That's why I'm here to explain these crazy cultural characteristics. I have 37 things about our culture that are weird to people around the world. I'll break them up into groups. Today, I'll start with the first five.

Almost everyone has heard of Starbucks. You can find one in many countries around the world. But coffee culture between countries are different. In most countries, drinking coffee is all about getting together with your friends and family. You might sit around a table and talk about life. That does not happen in America, generally. Most people order there coffee "to-go." We don't sit and drink coffee with friends. We drink it on the way out of our house or on the way to work. If you've been to New York, you know what this looks like.

Have you ever noticed that American money is one color? It's actually kind of boring, compared to other countries. But our money is practical and I'm not sure if the government is planning on changing it anyway.

There's nothing like McDonald's. Actually, there are fast food restaurants here that are one million times better. No matter where you decide to get a quick bite, you'll always have the option to upgrade your order. Portion sizes in America are already much bigger than what you get in other countries. But Americans are all about getting what's bigger, because bigger is better, right?

This might be the funniest thing about American food-related culture. In some countries, it is considered disrespectful to order something on the menu and ask to change something about the way it's made. This happens a lot in America.

Even though there's a lot of wasted food at the end of every night in every restaurant, most Americans don't like to waste. This is probably because eating at pretty much any restaurant is more expensive than people would like. No matter what people's true motive is, you'll probably hear them ask for a "to-go box." Some places in Europe would not be happy with this request.
