У моего vs мой
I cant seem to grasp when to use у моего or мой.
For example:
Мой брат имеет карие глаза и короткие волосы.
But is actually:
У моего брата карие глаза и короткие волосы.
I think this more of a genitive/accusative vs nominative thing I'm miss understanding.
So for the above sentence it is "У моего" because the subject (brother) is showing possession of the brown eyes and short hair. Thus being genetive? Is that right?

У моего брата = Мой брат имеет
These are two equivalents, they both mean possession.
We typically don't use the model subject nom.+ имеет + object gen./acc. to express possessive meaning, but it is possible and grammatically correct.
The problem is that these collocations work even without мой/моего:
У брата карие глаза и короткие волосы.

We NEVER say Мой брат имеет карие глаза и короткие волосы. It's artificial construction.If you use this it reveals your foreingness immediatly. Only У моего брата карие глаза и короткие волосы.

Yes, it’s a little bit difficult to explain to Russian children why they should say “I have brown eyes” or “I have a teddy bear 🧸 “ instead of “У меня карие глаза» or «У меня есть плюшевый медвежонок». We don’t usually say “Я имею карие глаза, игрушку», we say “У меня (есть)». It means that we translate “My brother has brown eyes” like “У моего брата карие глаза»

These sentences are equivalents but У моего брата карие глаза и короткие волосы is more colloquial. Describing my brother, I would say У моего брата карие глаза и короткие волосы but not Мой брат имеет карие глаза и короткие волосы.
