Can you help me with this sentence?
Hello:) I have to translate this sentence into Italian but I am not sure of what it means.
"Sylvie's reply echoed all the way down in the elevator."
Thank you so much in advance for you help!

Ciao Chiara,

The expression to "echo down" means that it continues to have an effect for a long period of time. I believe the figure of the elevator is to amplify the fact that her reply was heard not only at the floor she is at, but also in all the building maybe. The context you added does give more information but I'm fairly sure it's just the idiom to say that we all heard what Sylvie said.

Hope this helps

OK, thanks. The sentence doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe there's a word missing? The sentence would make more sense to me if it was about the elevator shaft.

From the information you have given, it means gone all the way down. As for what that thing is, we do not know. An echo is a sound that comes back, for example if someone drops their phone on the stairs, each noise it makes while hitting a step is an echo. The same thing in a cave, when someone says ‘hello’ loudly and then after every twenty second is ‘hello’ again. That is what an echo is.

I think the phone example explains echoed all the way down.

Hello Peter.. unfortunately the words are all there. Here is a wider context

"In the lobby, the harpy looks up but never once stops strumming. She smiles. "Hello, children," she says. "Have a blessed day".
Sylvie's reply echoed all the way down in the elevator.
I won't repeat it here, though, because it's really shocking and totally gross."
