Learning new words in your native language
Hi everyone,

I know we are all learning foreign languages but I wondered what does everyone do when they come across new words in their native language. I was reading last night and came across a new word I wasn't sure of. I was pretty certain that I got the definition from the context but wanted to make sure, so I stopped to look up the word in my online dictionary. Are your language learning habits the same in your native language as it is when learning a foreign language?

I have the same problem Mary and that bother me so much, I have to be a hundred percent sure that I got the correct meaning but after awhile I lost my desire to continue reading a book, but today when I start reading again I avoided the words that I don't know and after finishing the chapter, I returned back to these words and wrote them on my note and checked the meaning of them.

Yes! I do the same! I read a lot, especially scientific texts, so sometimes I see new words in my native language and I like to check them to be sure that I understand them well. I know I'm unique, because majority of my friends don't do it. Good to know that there is someone with the same trait :)

No. I don't think I even have anything like language learning habits with my native language.
 
When I see a word I've never seen before, then it's usually either borrowed from English or built from familiar words with the help of affixes. In either case it's not difficult to guess what it's supposed to mean.
 
The third possibility is that it's a scientific or technical term, in which case I might well read on without bothering to find out what it means. Either that or look it up, depending on how curious it has made me.
