Budgie Smuggler
“Alcove” – This is correct word?

Those who have seen “In Bruges” with the brilliant Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, will recall the creepy Flemish weapons dealer who appears to be obsessed with a particular English word.

On his first appearance with hitman Ken, played by Gleeson, he asks him:

“Alcove? – You sure this is correct word?”

Then, clearly unconvinced by Gleeson’s reply, he puts the same question later in the film to their psychopathic boss (and Gleeson’s nemesis), Harry, played by Ralph Fiennes.

This made me reflect on some of the questions native English speakers are asked about words or expressions that intrigue foreigners.

Can you recall any examples?

The question applies equally to speakers of other languages.
What odd questions have you been asked about your language?
