When angry, American fathers commonly shout, "As soon as you’re 18, you’re <a onmousemove="showTooltip(event,'not receiving financial support');return false" onmouseout="hideTooltip()" href="javascript:openpop('/lesson_vocab/list/4323?context=default','11355', '400', '400');">on your own</a> means a lot. It means you’re a <a onmousemove="showTooltip(event,'of the minimum age of adulthood');return false" onmouseout="hideTooltip()" href="javascript:openpop('/lesson_vocab/list/4323?context=default','11357', '400', '400');">legal adult</a>, and, more often than not, people move out of their parents’ home when they are 18.

…And some of them come back or never leave at all. Adults live with their parents for lots of reasons. Sometimes their parents need care, or they need a place to stay to save up money after college. Even though it’s relatively common, people tend to <a onmousemove="showTooltip(event,'disapprove, condescend');return false" onmouseout="hideTooltip()" href="javascript:openpop('/lesson_vocab/list/4323?context=default','3070', '400', '400');">look down on</a> adults who live with their parents in the United States.

What’s so wrong about living with your parents when you’re an adult?

There is nothing wrong in living with your parents... Having said that,,I feel that every adult should earn to be financially independent..

It all depends about personalities.

If the parents are too caring they can spoil their already adult child...if he/she gets everything from the parents the adult child might never learn to be independent and take responsibility and becomes indolent and lazy loser who just leeches the parents.

But it's also wrong for parent to abandon their children just because they're 18. Studying and living is often nowadays more expensive than they were when the parent were young adults (60-80s).
