How do you feel about Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) compared to Western Medicine(WM)?

I'm a Chinese person growing up in an ambience that people trust TCM more than WM. But TCM hasn't passed the examination of the EU's criteria. I've got some friends divided into different opinions on this issue. I just want to hear your voices. Thank you so much!

I prefer TCM and more holistic practices.  I think the place for Western Medicine is when we have diseases brought on by our Western lifestyles.  For long term health I would much rather go with TCM.  I have done TCM before for an extended period of time and it did for me what Western Medicine was not able to do.

Also it should be noted that our current modern Western medicine was not always what it is today.  It used to be more holistic with the use of herbs and natural methods.  There was a big controversy over osteopathic (holistic) and allopathic (modern Western) medicine.  This happened over a hundred years ago.  Apparently there was some unscruplous goings on and allopathic medicine was able to influence schools and standards.

Also I find that many people lump surgery into Western medicine.  Surgery predates allopathic medicine by thousands of years.  Surgery is a seperate realm of medicine altogether.  I often hear people hail Western medicine because of the capabilities of putting people back together after horrific injuries, but this isn't Western Medicine, this is surgery.

Perhaps it is not correct to compare WM and TCM.

They complement each other.

One should not be dismissed at the expense of the other.

There is a place for both treatment styles and medication in modern medicine and thinking.

I just know that traditional Chinese medicine are not scientifically tested but they work, it has been curing people for nearly 2000 years or so.

I think most Westerners just don't understand traditional medicine approaches. Since it's not something you find in an everyday pharmacy, it doesn't always cross our minds. I, for one though, would love to learn more about it. I agree with the other comment. Natural route is best when possible!

It's funny you wrote about this.  I am actually in the process of deciding whether to pursue TCM as a career move.  I think TCM and WM can compliment each other and depending on the situation, especially when it's an emergency and not, one or the other can be the better approach.  I believe that if it's not an extreme emergency, going the natural route to health is the better approach, but if the situation is dire and needs immediate attention then western medicine is best.
