I would like to know if the use of 'say' in the following sentence is correct "It is encoded by introducing a new symbol, say M, in the chain of symbols"

This is to say that I'm using 'M' as the name of a given symbol. I think I've read this expression but I can't remember where. I was planning to use this on my PhD dissertation.
