When do you realize your fighting for your life?

I had some medical problems--for the remainder of it, it was mild. Though during the times it got severe I was fighting for my life. It was really unbelievable things spiraled downhill fast but more so frightening! And some miracle happened and I was at the mildly bad spot again. The weirdest thing is I still am not convinced on how I got GERD in the first place. I used to never believe in 'small 'diseases' but they have to name reoccurring problems a lot of people are having something, right? Though I was on medicine, I got off of it as soon as I could swallow again, etc....I don't like usage of modern medicines in the long-term (over a month). So you read about it all the time: life is fragile, and it's just amazing how fragile it can get fast!

I always wanted to know what in hell this "fighting" thing means. Looks like it's a quite abstract concept.

My career? Future interests? Last year, not too long ago.
