An excellent question. First, it is not phonetic. Second, the rhythm and intonation patterns are not logical. Third, phrasal verbs are very difficult. Fourth, written English and spoken English are not similar -- we do not speak as we write. Fifth, there is a lot of memorization of special circumstances (e.g., prepositions, when to use infinitive as opposed to ING, etc). I hope this helps. Rick
