Before Istanbul, it was called Constantinopolis from the emperor Constantin, but  at that time he was not the ruler of Byzantine. The name Byzantine empire was given by historics the last century. At that time it was called East roman empire, thats why you call the Greeks as Rums. (Holy Coran El rum)
Vyzas, in Greek or Byzas in latin was the founder of Vizantio, at 685 bc. He was the son of king of Megara Nisos.
So it was called Vyzantio before it was called Constantinopolis. Thats your answer, and Kadicoy, on the other side (Asian part) was called Halkidona.
But does anybody know what Istanbul means?

Of course he was a great general, but an insparation for next generations?  As a pacifist  i prefer a genius general like Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. His mind was unique, in his personal life he was an unhappy man because nobody could inderstand him, but he was a true genius, and one of the best generals in the world history. He is a true insparation of reforming, not Fatih. Dont forget that Fatih killed his wife (Byzantine Prinsses Irene) because she was beautiful. He just took her head of, in front of his court. Brrrrrrrrrrr. As a woman i am not inspired by a man like that. On the contrary Kemal was a real gentleman, and a charismatic person, espesialy to woman, my aunt was lucky to meet him, and she had her photo next to her ,until she died.
