I love using italki and will continue using and recommending it but I have a few weeks of holiday coming up and I am thinking of going to China for an intensive total immersion month to take me to the next level. There are many places to choose from, from universities to private schools.
I am looking for flexibility as I don't have much time and I don't want to be in a place with a big foreigner population as I want to be forced into speaking Mandarin to communicate. That suggests a private school outside Beijing.
Has anyone had any experience in short term language schools?
Thanks everyone but I arranged my trip today. A private school with small classes. not sure how it will work out but I am looking forward to it. I do enjoy travelling and have something to look forward to. I also need to step up my learning as I need to be able to communicate without English.

个人浅见
yeah, a one-on-one tutor is best. Using textbook to learn Chinese is not the best way. I think what you need is to use Chinese in your life rather than in email and message, right? And how long will you stay in China?
I need to spend several hours a day, in a classroom setting. It won't be a holiday and I intend to spend all day 5 days a week in class or studying. Places I have looked at put you with other students but it is not clear if you are going to end up in a class where the others are being taught '你好!' or perhaps so far ahead of me I am lost.
Perhaps a one-on-one tutor is best?
