Have they ever called themselves as witches? Or were they simply free thinking women escaping from church in middle ages? We know the healers before were all women historically. Later it became under the control of males disguised as science man or doctor who supports religion wholeheartedly. I think witchcraft was only the discovered mystery of nature which came originally from "the mother nature". Some dudes just hated that woman. In a way I see wicca practicable in the context of being closer to nature and its "spirits" by utilizing our inner power which is naturally not compatible with patriarchy.
