This novel has also been the subject of much controversy. Some critics believed it was racist and that it portrayed slaves unfairly, as despairing, weak people unable to fight for themselves, and responsible for their own enslavement. In addition, several characters in the book are racist, and their language and attitudes will offend some readers. From the very beginning of The Slave Dancer, themes of imprisonment and escape are evident throughout the novel.
