I'm a middle school student in China. My teacher always tell us that some Chinese people are not polite in other country.Sometimes they break the rules.Could you please tell me some examples? So that I can learn more about it.
The Chinese language and the Chinese way is so very different from many other languages and places that there can be a large cultural divide. The Chinese political regime does not allow a lot of cutural exchange and therefore Chinese people do not understand as much about other cultures and how to act around them.
The fact that Americans laugh so easily and smile so much could be seen as extremely rude to Chinese people, just like the stolid Chinese can seem rude to us.
It goes both ways. The inability to communicate well always can create a feeling of "rudeness" whehter intended or not.
There are many cultures that have things about them that I find rude in my own culture, but my cultural programming also seems rude in other cultures.
That's what is so great about italki! We can explain to each other what comes across as rude. Otherwise, how do would we know!?
I think maybe it's a kind of culture shock. I was surprised when my Chinese friend asked me whether I'm married or not, within minutes we knew each other. It is not a good thing to do in my country, but then, I was told it is common in China. Another time I was asked how much my salary was by a friend whom I knew just a few days before.
I don’t know what to think of Chinese people. But based upon the ones I’ve met I can say: I like their work ethics and most of Chinese people I have met are curious and kind. But that pretty much sums it up. I don’t have Chinese friends or acquaintances to a level that I can learn anything about their culture, I think it’s too bad :(
Well there are things I dont like about Chinese and there are things I like about them. What I don't like about them is that they give cheap labor. I am not saying all chinese business man here in my country are like that but lots of them give their employee below minimum wage and they make them work more than 8 hours. I also think they dont trust other people who are not chinese. But what I like them is they are quite friendly and good if you are their friends. I can ask for discount if I buy something from them. It is easy to negotiate with them. They are also generous with their culture.. I mean they like sharing their cultures..
I think it depends. I have encountered both polite and impolite Chinese people in my area just like I have encountered polite and impolite Americans in my area. Hehehe. Anyhow, a lot of Chinese students who come here all seem to go to the mall, to the diner, etc in a big group. I never see them include Americans or other foreign students. I just find it unfortuante, because if they need help with English, I could help them and I could get help with the Chinese language from them in return. Let me join your group too! Hehehe :)
