A Small Town Boy

Being born in Western Massachusetts and growing up here all my life, I feel a little embarrassed sometimes when I speak to others from around the world. Why? Because whenever we exchange photos, they have skyscrapers reaching to the horizon in theirs and I have to send back photos of Six Flags New England, small towns in Massachusetts, the beautiful mountains I hike every weekend, the apple orchards my family goes to in the fall to pick apples, the strawberry fields where we pick strawberries at every June, the fair that comes through town in the fall, the stable Josh and I board our horses at, the campsite we stayed at last summer at D.A.R. State Forest in Goshen, Massachusetts, and the corn fields I drive through on my way to the highway to get to my job in Springfield, Massachusetts, which is the only city around here with skyscrapes, not counting the University of Massachusetts which has several highrise dormatories for college students to dorm in. Hehehehe.

Yes, I am a smalltown boy. Boston is nearly 2 hours east of me by car and New York City is 3 hours south of me.

Anyhow, here is a photo of the corn maze Mike's Maze did a few Halloweens ago. Every year, they carve something into the corn field, making a maze out of if which people can try to find their way out of. In this photo, they had carved Julia Child's face. Another year, they carved Noah Webster who created the first American English dictionary and standardized American spelling. This is why we write "color" instead of "colour" in America. Hehehehe :)

The photo of the maze is here: http://www.mikesmaze.com/Images/Julia-Child-Maze-Hi-Res.jpg

I can tell you as a city girl who lives in a small apartment in high-rises.. It looks like you live in an ideal part of Massachusetts! It sounds like a dream life, at least to me.. I would really love to live in the beautiful sun-kissed town where people and animals can enjoy some "social interaction" in natural surroundings. You gotta keep us posted about your town like paradise.

That sounds awful! So sorry. hehe. I'm from Canton, MA and I too felt self conscious a little about it being a small town although way closer to Boston than your town. Looking back I wonder what the heck I was thinking.

Really? that you like skyscrapers : )) I think people only live in skyscrapers because they have to. They must to live there to go to school, go to work. I always want to live in some area like your now, with beautiful mountains, fields, forrests,... the sounds for me like amazing.

Why do you care about where do you come from, don't you remember that you are an American? Where do you hide "an American dream"? I think that every American talk about it every day? The thing here is Who you are is not depending on where you were born. I think you don't need to have "the embarrassing feeling". I've look at the picture, it is an amazing picture and I'm sure that your town is beautiful too. I only feel embarrassed when I don't have enough knowledge to talk with other people, for example I will feel embarrassed when I talk with you, because my English knowedge isn't good enough. Otherwise, I never think of a reason that I'm an Asian, I come from a poor country, etc... Because you don't know that people like you and me will become :) If Abraham Lincoln feft the same way like you, he never had a change to become a president.

Again, the badass a maze, it was really amazing.
