“能“ significa "potere", "saper fare" o "riuscire a", esprime un'abilità o una capacità fisica.

你真的能吃三碗米饭吗？Riesci davvero a mangiare 3 ciotole di riso?

今天她不能唱歌，因为她的嗓子疼。Oggi lei non riesce a cantare perché ha il mal di gola.

他能扛很重的东西。Lui può/riesce a sollevare oggetti pesanti.

A: 你怎么哭了？Perché stai piangendo?

B: 对不起，我不能说。Mi dispiace, non posso dirlo.

“可以” si usa per chiedere il permesso di fare qualcosa o per esprimere qualcosa che potrebbe accadere ma non è una cosa certa.

我可以进来吗？Posso entrare?

妈妈，我可以吃蛋糕吗？Mamma, posso mangiare il dolce?

我是刘翔，你也可以叫我彼得。Sono Liu Xiang, puoi chiamarmi anche Peter.

Anche se non lo hai chiesto, esiste anche "会". Significa "sapere come fare qualcosa", qualcosa per cui hai studiato o sei allenato/addestrato a fare.

他会修电脑。Lui sa riparare i computer.

我会说普通话。Io so parlare cinese (mandarino).

我会跳舞。Io so ballare.

能  be able to ...

I am able to speak Chinese.  (more formal)

可以 can +Verb.

I can speak Chinese.  (oral)

「能」和「可以」兩個詞一般幾乎都可通用。在一般口語會話，「可以」比較常用，若要仔細區分：

1. 「可以」比較帶有「允許」（allowed）和「強制」（compulsive）的語氣（manner of speaking），
2. 而「能（夠）」則是比較帶有商量（discussable）和委婉（tactful）的語氣。
3. 但，比較需要花力氣（sweaty）和須有能力（capable）才能完成的工作，則用「能」較符合習慣用語。

1. Q: 我能吃這塊蛋糕嗎？ A: 可以的。
2. 妳: 老闆，我晚上有事，能提早走嗎？ 老闆: 不可以！
3. 你們可以小聲一點嗎 ~ ~？（強制要求） vs. 你們能小聲一點嗎？（商量的語氣）

I thought you use 可以 to ask permission, like "May I sit?" and 能 for your ability to do something, like "I can't come because I'm too busy."

Sometimes, they are the same. Both mean "be able to."

可以 means "may," too.

There is some difference between the two.
