<em>Urge</em> is related to <em>urgent</em> which comes from a Latin word that means 'to press hard'

<em>Encourage</em> comes from Old French and means 'to make strong, hearten'

 

They mean something similar but you can see the difference. Urge implies an external force. Encourage relates to something within.

 

Most of the time I read with my grandson while he does his homework. This is encouraging to him. Sometimes, however, I am busy with something else and I must urge him to stay on task.
