Wimbledon helds its championshps each summer. And it one of 4 Grand Slam tournaments. Football is really worldwide (although North America, Asia and Oceania still aren't good enough, we see them competing with the rest every 4 years). So you just can't compare tournaments. You even haven't be a football fan to support some team at WC.

Do you know, who holds the champion title in chess? Or where he won it? If you don't, that's probably because since 90's they started to hold championships every year. If it were 80's, chances are, you'd know well.
