Which language do you choose as a second language and why?

Needless to say, most Chinese would choose English as our second languge because of compulsory education and its popular influence. In my opinion, many Chinese choose Japanese as another language because of easier avaliable resouces to learn and  nearer geographical location with Japan. What is the condition about yours?  I think Spanish, Germany,French are very popular too aroud the world.

The obliged languages in the school system here are English, French and German. These are also our neighbouring countries. I think one should just choose the language for which one has the most use. That is most likely the language spoken in a country with which you have a lot of economical bounds, often a neighbouring country. Or a lingua franca like English. I would not choose a language just because a lot of people speak that language. For example, many people speak Arabic, but since I never speak to them, or want to speak to them, I am not interested in learning that language at all.

Interesting question.

I chose English as my second language since I've started learning it. I live in Brazil and for that reason it would be easier if I had chosen Spanish because Portuguese and Spanish are similar in many ways except for a few things, of course. Although it might be true that learn something is easier when you start it as soon as possible, the passion of learning something is important as well.

I do not regret for choosing English, as I said above. Also, I haven't started it so early and because of it I got some difficult when I'm trying to understand something in another language, but I fell in love with English language and I'm sure it's going to be a pleasure keep it up by my entire life.

In my state of Texas (which is the second most populated state in the United States) more than half the population is hispanic and the numbers are growing fast. I'm learning Spanish because I think probably (if you take into account the illegal aliens) there are more people that speak Spanish in my state than English. Spanish is THE "foreign" language to know in Texas. Texas was actually once a part of Mexico.

Again, I have no choice in this. There is no another language to choose in my country. So, I studied English as I study the other materials but it worth it. It is a beautiful language. I study Spanish a lone :)

English is my second language. Here’s a simple truth: When languages has similarities in the meaning of words, the difficulty of learning becomes easier. Similarity in general closes the gap between differences, depending on the degree.

You have to know grammar in your own language to compare to another. Their some people from China who could speak English as a second language, much more easier than others for this very same reason. Also beginning at a young age, cognition is at its best. The more older someone gets, the less adaptive to strange languages, which means it could become harder to learn.

So learning in compulsory or elementary school is a good start, hope the thresholds for stepping in various degrees in learning a second language could be easy for everyone. Unfortunately it’s not that simple if different symbol letters is being used.

They’d say the Korean language is much more easier for Asians, but I’m not sure. If I finished at the highest peak, I’ll be learning a new language. I just like to finish what I’ve started. For instance: Now I’m a B1 level of English according to the Oxford Online Placement Test (OOPT) I’ve taken yesterday. Native speakers barely know about this tests because they’re not facing any difficulties in learning this as a second, the logic in this is that they’ve learned it since child birth.

Yes, I would like to encourage to be very logic and plain simple in words, to learners of the same language. As you discover more words, for the proper use to say what you mean automatically. Write many things of interest. The reason is to get to know people from different countries and work with them. It’s about learning and advancing in the social coherence with your fellow man. If papers are not read, than what’s the use. Stay connected and communicate properly is far more social than just dry reading and writing.
